Puppet Soccer vs Toy Soccer Cup: big-head chaos, or table-football tactics?

Puppet Soccer has been making people laugh since 2014: marionette footballers with giant heads, one against one, kicking, jumping and fouling their way to the World Cup. It has over 10 million downloads on Google Play and a 4.3-star rating from more than 460,000 players.

We make Toy Soccer Cup, a free table-football game with 3D toy footballers. We are one of the two sides in this comparison, so every fact about Puppet Soccer comes from its own Google Play listing, and we will say plainly where it is ahead.

The short answer

Puppet Soccer is real-time and chaotic: you run, jump and kick with one big-headed player, and power-ups like chewing gum or ice turn the match upside down. Toy Soccer Cup is turn-based and tactical: you flick each of your seven toy footballers, choosing angle and power, like Subbuteo on a screen.

  • Choose Puppet Soccer if you want fast, goofy one-on-one matches and do not mind the chaos.
  • Choose Toy Soccer Cup if you like thinking before you shoot, want whole leagues to play through and want to play online in your browser with nothing to install.

What Puppet Soccer gets right

It is pure fun. The listing boasts 10 bonus effects — chewing gum, ice, sock slime, gypsum, super and mini power, jump springs — and a lovely rule: in overtime the goals get bigger to speed up the finish. Four control schemes let each player find a comfortable one.

And its split-screen mode for two players on one phone is a proper party trick. Twelve years after launch it is still being updated.

Why Toy Soccer Cup is the better long game

Skill instead of luck. Power-ups are a laugh, but they decide matches. In Toy Soccer Cup nothing falls from the sky: the ball curls, lifts and bounces off the boards because of how you flicked it, and the School of Tricks teaches The Curve, The Chip, The Sweet Spot, The Rocket and The Bank Shot. Read about the physics of the flick if you like the maths.

Fair online play. Puppet Soccer's listing lists upgrades for kick, jump and speed. In Toy Soccer Cup you can train your club against the computer, but in live online duels both teams start equal, and coins are never sold: they are only earned by playing.

A whole football world. 57 national leagues with 858 original clubs, a cup for every league, a Weekly Cup of 32 players that crowns a champion every Sunday, a Daily Challenge with a new minigame each day and a 625-sticker album of 25 national teams.

Play it in the browser. A lot of people search for "puppet soccer online" or look for it on game websites because they want to play without installing — often on a school or work computer. Toy Soccer Cup runs at toysoccercup.com/play on any computer, Chromebook or tablet.

I built Toy Soccer Cup on my own — the physics, the 57 leagues, the 858 clubs — and I write this notebook: 115 articles in 8 languages. I check every historical claim against its source, and when the sources disagree, I say so. Corrections welcome.
