The notebook
New Star Soccer is a cult classic. Its listing quotes Eurogamer calling it "the best football game on mobile and tablets", describes it as BAFTA award-winning, and backs it up with over 10 million downloads and 2.3 million ratings averaging 4.4 stars on Google Play.
We make Toy Soccer Cup, a free table-football game with 3D toy footballers. We are not neutral — so every fact about New Star Soccer comes from its own Google Play listing, and we will say clearly that it is an excellent game. The question here is a different one: who is each game for?
New Star Soccer is a life simulator. You start, in its own words, "as a fragile 16 year old" and manage everything: training, contracts, team-mates, the coach, your partner and your sponsors. The football is one part of a bigger story. Toy Soccer Cup is about the match — seven toy players a side, and you flick every one of them.

Because it understood, early, that football is also everything around the ninety minutes. You build a career from nothing, deal with the coach and the dressing room, and live with the consequences of your choices. Its listing promises it works "as a snack game for a few minutes or an intensive few hours", and millions of players agree.
This is not a criticism — it is information from the listing itself. Google Play rates New Star Soccer Teen, with the content descriptors "Simulated Gambling" and "Digital Purchases". Its description invites you to "risk your earnings in the casino, explore sinister bribes" and even own race-horses. For an adult, that is part of the drama. For a younger child, most parents would rather not.
Toy Soccer Cup was designed around the opposite question: would a ten-year-old understand this, and would their parents be happy with it? There is no casino and no game of chance, no free-text chat (players only exchange friendly preset phrases), you just pick a nickname to play online, and coins are never sold — only earned by playing. We have written more about what makes an online game safe for kids and what "free" really means.
The match itself. Every goal is a move you built: which player, what angle, how hard. The ball curls, lifts and bounces off the walls, and the School of Tricks teaches five shots — The Curve, The Chip, The Sweet Spot, The Rocket and The Bank Shot.
A big football world. 57 national leagues, 858 original clubs, a cup for every league, a Weekly Cup that crowns a champion every Sunday, a Daily Challenge with a new minigame each day and a 625-sticker album.
Play together. Two players on the same device, or online in ranked arenas from Wood to Legend — where live duels always start equal.
New Star Soccer's developers also make Retro Goal, a pixel-art arcade football game — we compared Retro Goal with Toy Soccer Cup too.
Google Play rates it Teen, with the descriptors "Simulated Gambling" and "Digital Purchases", and its description mentions a casino and bribes. It is aimed at teenagers and adults.
