Head Ball 2 vs Toy Soccer Cup: superpowers, or a fair match?

Head Ball 2 is a big, loud, brilliant idea: two cartoon footballers with oversized heads, one against one, 90 seconds to score more than the other. It has over 100 million downloads, a 4.5-star rating from 2.6 million ratings, and Google's Editors' Choice badge.

We make Toy Soccer Cup, a free table-football game with 3D toy footballers. We are clearly on one side, so every fact about Head Ball 2 comes from its own Google Play listing, and we will be honest about what it does better.

The short answer

The games agree on one thing — football should be quick and fun — and disagree on almost everything else. Head Ball 2 is an arcade brawl: headers, superpowers and, in its own words, "everything is permitted, as long as you win!" Toy Soccer Cup is table football: seven players a side, one flick at a time, and the only power-up is how well you aim.

  • Choose Head Ball 2 if you want fast real-time chaos and love unlocking and upgrading characters.
  • Choose Toy Soccer Cup if you want a match decided by skill alone — online duels start equal — plus leagues, a weekly cup and daily challenges, free in your browser.

What Head Ball 2 does better than almost anyone

It makes online football instant. You are matched against a real opponent somewhere in the world, and ninety seconds later someone has won. Its listing adds teams you can join or create, five leagues from Bronze to Diamond and a weekly competition between teams. It is sharp, funny and very well made — the Editors' Choice badge is deserved.

Why Toy Soccer Cup is the fairer game

Nobody out-upgrades you in a live duel. Head Ball 2's listing invites you to pick from 125 upgradeable characters, unlock accessories to "improve your football hero" and use superpowers. In Toy Soccer Cup, live online duels always start equal: what you train with coins helps against the computer and in the Weekly Cup, never in a head-to-head against another person. Your flick against theirs.

No money in the equation. Head Ball 2's in-app purchases include random items, according to its listing. In Toy Soccer Cup coins are never sold, nothing random costs real money, and the only purchase — on Android — removes the ads. Those ads appear at most once every two minutes, never before your first match.

Skill you can see. Every goal in Toy Soccer Cup is a shot you chose: which player, what angle, how hard. The ball curls, lifts and bounces off the side walls, and our School of Tricks teaches The Curve, The Chip, The Sweet Spot, The Rocket and The Bank Shot. If you like the maths of it, read about the physics of the flick.

A world to play in. Beyond online: 57 national leagues with 858 original clubs, a Weekly Cup that crowns a champion every Sunday, and a Daily Challenge that gives the whole world the same minigame on the same day.

For parents

Head Ball 2 is rated Everyone and its humour is harmless, but its own pitch is that you can "hit your opponent" and that anything goes. Toy Soccer Cup is built around a gentler idea of competition: there is no free-text chat (only friendly preset phrases), you just need a nickname to play online, and we even wrote about teaching kids to lose well.

I built Toy Soccer Cup on my own — the physics, the 57 leagues, the 858 clubs — and I write this notebook: 115 articles in 8 languages. I check every historical claim against its source, and when the sources disagree, I say so. Corrections welcome.
